My deep appreciation for flowers and plants began in childhood, watching my mother tend to them with dedication and affection on our balcony. Every morning, I would join her in this ritual, learning firsthand how the presence of nature not only soothes but also transforms any space, making it more beautiful and inviting.
I have been a florist for seven years now.
Flowers have always held a profound place in human history, symbolizing beauty, love, joy, and even sorrow. Since ancient times, they have been used in religious rituals and as a means of emotional expression, carrying forward a tradition that blends aesthetics with meaning. Today, florists continue to innovate within the design industry, shaping atmospheres, enhancing special moments, and contributing to the global economy through their artistry.
A decade ago, when I moved to New York, I sought to expand my knowledge by studying at the New York Botanical Garden, one of the most esteemed institutions in the field of botany. This experience expanded my perspective on the floral world and provided the foundation for my professional journey.
In the early years, I spent my time creating arrangements for friends and helping people bring greenery into their homes. What started as a passion project naturally evolved into a thriving business. Today, as the founder of Green Sprout Studio, I specialize in floral designs for events, weddings, private dinners, and collaborations with brands in Brazil, the United States, and Japan. Beyond crafting arrangements, I personally oversee client relations, negotiations, sourcing flowers and supplies, and even deliveries.
Over time, I’ve learned that being a florist is much more than the romanticized image it often carries—it’s a demanding craft that requires meticulous planning, dedication, creativity, and relentless energy to ensure every detail is executed to perfection.
The Creative Process
For me, working with flowers is more than just a profession—it’s a passion that renews itself with every project. My creative process begins with inspiration, which can emerge from a color palette, the unique texture of seasonal blooms, or the story behind each arrangement.
In New York, the flower market operates from 5 AM to 10 AM, which means my day starts early to ensure I source the freshest flowers for my clients. Every bouquet is selected with care, considering freshness, hue, and longevity. I always prioritize seasonal flowers, as they bring an authentic and natural touch to each arrangement.
Once I’ve made my selections, I head to my studio in Brooklyn to begin the preparation process. I unpack the flowers, remove plastic wraps and rubber bands, clean the stems, trim them diagonally for better water absorption, and place them in fresh water. I then organize the flowers by species and color, choose the vases, and gather the necessary tools—all within a carefully curated space, accompanied by soft, usually classical, music to inspire creativity.
Before composing each arrangement, I reflect on its purpose. If it’s for a wedding, I consider the harmony between the flowers and the event’s visual identity. If it’s a gift bouquet, I aim to capture the essence of the recipient. This initial stage is crucial to ensuring that every creation carries a unique and meaningful message.
In the final phase, I focus on achieving the perfect balance of shape, texture, volume, and color, adjusting each element until it reaches a sublime harmony. Completing an arrangement is always a moment of fulfillment, as the joy and emotion of those who receive the flowers confirm that every detail and effort was worthwhile.
For me, creating with flowers is about telling stories and conveying emotions through the beauty and essence of nature.
